Overview
The Marangu route, commonly known as the “Coca-Cola route,” stands out as one of the most popular paths to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro. Considered one of the easier routes, it is often chosen by beginners or those with limited hiking experience. However, it remains a demanding trek that requires excellent physical fitness. The route is dotted with shared huts providing overnight accommodation; they are equipped with essential facilities like dining areas, bathrooms, and bunk beds. Although staying in these huts offers more comfort than camping, it is still recommended to bring a sleeping bag and personal items.
For those seeking a guided experience, Reveal Kilimanjaro Tours presents Marangu as a private climb lasting either five or six days. The five-day option excludes an acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, allowing for a challenging yet rewarding ascent. The summit is approached from the southeast. Unfortunately, this route offers less scenic beauty during the descent compared to other routes.
DAY 1: Arrival & Briefing
Step into the adventure the moment you touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Your journey begins with a seamless transfer to your pleasant lodging in either Arusha or Moshi, where your knowledgeable guide awaits your arrival. Prepare for an immersive briefing and gear check that sets the stage for your upcoming adventure.
This gathering isn’t just about logistics; it’s a chance to connect with fellow explorers if you’re part of a group. As you pack your bag for the dawn departure, ensure it fits within the 15 kg limit – a crucial detail that ensures a smooth trekking experience. Any items unnecessary for the trek can be safely stored at your lodge.
Throughout your journey, relish in the luxury of full board accommodations. While delicious meals are part of the package, feel free to bring along your favorite snacks for those extra moments of delight. Embrace the excitement, the companionship, and the adventure of your trek as it unfolds!
The hiking times given for each day do not include breaks. Altitudes gained relate to the altitude difference between camps. It does not reflect the meters we ascend each day. To support acclimatization, we will be going up and down and will spend several nights at a roughly similar altitude.
DAY 2: Trekking Starts From Marangu Gate
You will be privately transferred from your hotel to Kilimanjaro National Park, marking the beginning of your climb. Following a delicious breakfast, we’ll head to Machame Gate, where you’ll complete the necessary paperwork and secure your climbing permit. Then:
As you enter through Marangu Gate, you immerse yourself in the heart of a green rainforest cascading down the eastern slope of the mountain. The trail ahead is like a nature lover’s dream, decked out with a large variety of vibrant flowers and plants – hanging vines, beautiful orchids, and ferns that seem straight out of a fairy tale. You’ll also find fallen tree logs, now covered in soft moss, adding to the sense of fascination.
After about 3 to 4 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Mandara Hut 2700m, a snug little spot perfect for catching your breath. If you are feeling adventurous, just a quick 20-minute stroll will lead you to Maundi Crater. Here a breathtaking, panoramic view of the majestic Mawenzi Peak, stretches out before your eyes. It’s like stepping into a painting, and it’s all waiting for you!
Today, the initial segment of the trail leads us through a thick forest filled with colorful lichen. As you get closer to the forest’s edge, you’ll come upon a beautiful meadow covered in flowers that change with the passing seasons. When the sky is clear, you have an amazing view of the tough Mawenzi summit.
Right before you reach Horombo Hut, get ready for a sight you won’t forget incredible Giant Senecia and Lobelia plants that are unlike anything you have seen before if this is your first trip to Africa. Some of these Seneca plants have been around for centuries, standing tall and telling stories of the long passage of time. It’s an extraordinary experience. Finally, we will arrive at Horombo Hut 3720 meters to spend your night.
Today, we suggest taking it easy and getting used to the high altitude. This will greatly improve your chances of reaching the top without feeling sick. You can make the most of the day by going on a short uphill walk to see the beautiful zebra rocks, which are 4020 meters high. They got their name from looking like zebras with their black and white stripes. When you come back to Horombo Hut, you’ll have a tasty warm lunch waiting for you. In the afternoon, take some time to relax and get ready for tomorrow’s hike.
Picture yourself walking through wide open spaces, from grassy plains to sandy deserts. In the beginning, the path is a bit steep, but it levels out further along. At the end of it, the stunning Mawenzi and Kibo peaks await you, standing tall and majestic. After a satisfying 5-6 hours of trekking, you’ll reach your goal: the famous Kibo hut 4703 meters, perched at the very top of Kibo Mountain. Get ready for an unforgettable experience.
After a brief period of rest in bed, you commence your journey toward the summit just before midnight. The path ahead ascends steeply, curving in serpentines. Tonight, you are not alone in this endeavor, as numerous other groups are also striving to reach the summit.
Depending on your physical condition, you will arrive at Gillman’s Point in time to witness the breathtaking sunrise casting its glow over the Mawenzi summit. Gilman’s Point signifies your arrival at the crater’s edge, and from this vantage point, it’s a leisurely walk to the summit.
The trail gradually ascends along the crater’s rim. However, if exhaustion takes its toll, you have the option to turn back and receive a certificate acknowledging your successful ascent of Kilimanjaro. Yet, if you venture further towards Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point, you’ll behold the last remnants of its icy fields. The summit itself is distinguished by a flagged iron pole, a plaque commemorating Tanzania’s Declaration of Freedom, and a box containing the summit book.
After taking photos and celebrating your outstanding achievement, you retrace your steps back to Kibo Hut. There, you will have time to rest and enjoy a nourishing meal before embarking on the descent towards Horombo Hut 3720m.
Having already acquainted yourself with the route in the opposite direction, today’s expedition entails descending towards the Mandara Hut in the morning. There, you will enjoy an extended lunch break before embarking on your journey back to the Marangu Gate.
At Marangu Gate, we conclude the necessary park formalities and proudly obtain certificates that can be displayed as a symbol of achievement. The final descent to the gate is expected to take around 3-4 hours. Afterward, we reunite with our vehicles and head back to the hotel, where you can indulge in a refreshing shower and rejoice with refreshing cold beverages. Enjoy a restful overnight stay at your chosen accommodation.
On this day, you are scheduled to be collected from your place of stay and transported to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). There, you will embark on your flight or, if you have chosen to prolong your time in Tanzania with an exciting wildlife Safari, commence the subsequent phase of your adventure.
